Residential Design - 5,000' Home: African Immigrant

Fall 2014

The goal of this project is to design a 5000 foot home for U.S. Immigrant from Johannesburg, South Africa, Richard Lerato and his twin daughters that almost one year old. The house is going to be in the style of modern-contemporary with symmetrical façade which means it will have an open concept, clean lines and large windows that will be able to open to enjoy the natural surroundings. The interior spaces will be inter-related (open floor plan) and requires a separate media room and home office. The rooms will be light and bright with open, airy interior space which gives the feeling of being outside while being inside.  The colors used will be neutrals with splashes of color that will be prevalent in South Africa art and architecture to remind the clients of South Africa. There will also be a studio space for Richard to enjoy his hobby of build furniture.
Richard Lerato Decided to immigrate to the United States after his partner Gene passed away, to allow their twin girls to be closer to gene’s parents and extended family. Sense, he is moving away from his home town, he wants his home to keep some aspects of his heritage though the use of art and deco accents for his daughter to know where they came from.

Model and Custom Art Piece

•The Custom design that I came up with was a sculpture made from found items that were thought of as trash but once put together they became a piece of art that should be displayed proudly in the home. The design came from my love of repurposing found, unused pieces most people wouldn’t look at twice. It will be displayed in one of the many bookshelves in the common area of the home. The functionality of this design is purely for enjoyment and a piece of conversation. The challenges faced with the design was how to connect everything together and to manipulate the materials to what I envisioned.

•The materials used in the sculpture were a block of maple, wire and an fender ornament off of a 1958 Chevy sedan. The aesthetic quality of the materials make a great piece of conversation which should be used though out any design but especially modern designs with the lack of orientation. The block of maple was found in the scape wood pile in my families small work shop, the wire was acquired from Doctor Harlan when she gave me an old lampshade she was going to throw away, and the ornament was taken from a junked 1958 Chevy sedan from a salvage yard in Russellville, Ar. The materials were put together with the use of heavy duty glue. The custom pieces were put together by me. The Maple block of wood was first planed, sanded, touch burned and oiled. The wire was heated to remove it easier form the lamp shade and then hand bent to the correct shape. The fender ornament was wire wheel brushed to clean, soften the rough edges and to make it shine. A small piece of wood was carved and fitted to the underside of the ornament to have a space where the wire could be connected.
